Press Release Body = Skilled migrants have found an ally in the person of
Immigration Senator Amanda Vanstone.
This is in light of recent disagreements coming from Opposition leader Kim Beazley.
Early on, Mr. Beazley has expressed disapproval of Australian visa easily granted to
skilled migrants. For Mr. Beazley, the explosion of skilled migrants in Australian
soil is seriously depriving true Australian citizens from getting decent jobs in
their own country.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, one international migrant enters
the country every 4 minutes and 47 seconds.
While Senator Vanstone acknowledges Mr. Beazley's point, she also reiterates the
wide-ranging benefits Australian immigration is contributing to the country's
economy. The country is still experiencing chronic skills shortage, with regional
industries suffering the most. The government's solution: beef up Australian
immigration and simplify Australian visa application to attract skilled migrants
everywhere, for them to successfully migrate, work, and permanently settle in
Australia.
The largest group of immigrants, as to date, is Brits, owing to their proficiency in
English, which is a primary requirement for Australian immigration. But this hasn't
stopped Chinese and Indian skilled migrants from entering the country too. For
Senator Vanstone, Beazley's opposition to skilled migrants is taking on a
xenophobic, racist undertone, particularly biased against Asian migrants.
"He doesn't intend you to think of Bristol, Blackpool and Birmingham. He wants you
to worry about people coming from Bombay, Beijing and, for that matter, Bangladesh
and every other country where there are 'low wages'," said the Senator. Beazley's
attack on them was unbecoming of a national leader.
Despite oppositions, Australian visa application is still at its healthiest, as
Senator Vanstone swears to fully support skilled migrants everywhere.
